Fence Repair Tips

Tips for Repairing a Wooden Fence

Your fence has a big part to play in the protection and beauty of your home. However, a fence isn’t built to last forever! It can be damaged by storms and Mother Nature. So if a portion of your wooden fence is damaged, instead of replacing it, you can still get a few more years out of it if you simply repair the damaged section. The following are a few handy fence repair tips that will help you through the process.

Determine the Damaged Area

Assess the damaged area and determine if it is, in fact, worth repairing or if you need a completely new fence. This is typically down to a personal decision and is based on how much repair you want to do. If the damaged area spans more than two panels, which is approximately 20ft, it is time for a new fence. The job will be harder the larger the repair.

Get Replacement Material and Tools

Before you begin to remove the old section of your fence, make sure you have the proper tools and fencing materials ahead of time. In some cases, you may only need a few support brackets to reconnect the fence, while in others you will need to replace the post.

Tear Down the Damaged Section

Now, you need to remove the damaged part of the fence. You could be lucky and be able to re-use this material, so be careful how you tear it down. Obviously, try and salvage as much as possible to save you time and money.

Repair the Fence

Install the replacement fencing material, and make sure that everything is level. Give the fence a good shake to see if it will be stable enough to withstand severe winds and random impacts.
